Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring 2025
The Haute Couture Fashion Week is widely recognized as the pinnacle of the fashion industry. Specifically, all eyes turn to the runways in Paris, France, every two times a year to see new innovations. This year, the first edition of the Haute Couture Fashion Week lasted 4 days. From the 27th to the 30th of January, the capital of artistic fashion became a spectacular spot to see gorgeous expressions of craftsmanship on threads. Because of the special occasion, the iconic fashion house Schiaparelli became the first to introduce its Spring-Summer 2025 collection.
With the release of 33 looks, the Italian fashion house revived its legacy at the start of the Fashion Week. On this opportunity, the sophistication of the collection relied on the craftsmanship of pieces with a soft transition between the past aesthetics and modern design.
Precisely, that impression between past inspirations and modern philosophies in design is what inspired the creation of Icarus, which is the name for the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2025 collection. You can discover the collection’s history and all its details here, so keep it up…
The essence
The Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2025 collection is just one more piece in the long history of this house. Founded in 1927 by the Italian socialite and aristocrat Elsa Schiaparelli, the brand has a curious history. Elsa was born into a comfortable lifestyle, and since her young age, she decided to enjoy the privileges rather than seek independence. After years of moving countries and having personal struggles with a dysfunctional marriage, Elsa decided to create her own clothing brand in Paris with the support of Paul Poiret, a famous haute couture French designer and close friend.
Surprisingly, even without any experience or knowledge of sewing, Elsa’s creations were a success, and Schiaparelli became an iconic haute couture house during the ’30s. However, the Second World War devastated the company, leading to its official closure in 1954. Elsa still didn’t abandon her spirit and opened a perfume company with the same name in 1957. After years, Elsa retired and perished in 1973 in Paris. However, Elsa’s legacy was not forgotten, and Diego Della Valle, chairman of Tod’s Group, acquired the rights and revived the fashion house in 2014. 11 years later, the house is led by the American designer Daniel Roseberry.
Daniel Roseberry joined the House in 2019, becoming the first American to lead a French haute couture house (and the youngest). Ironically, Daniel also didn’t have experience with haute couture (just like Elsa), but that didn’t limit his ability to improve and take Schiaparelli to new milestones. Today, the house has achieved such a high level of prestige that it has become the favorite for celebrities such as Beyoncé, Michelle Obama, and Lady Gaga.
The collection
Called Icarus, the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2025 is a tribute to the beauty of the past in the present. Daniel’s inspiration began in Lyon, a French city, at an antique store selling old ribbons. These ribbons were made with designs from the 20s and 30s and “forgotten” during the Second World War. This specific tiny historical reflection provoked a question that led to the inspiration of the collection. Daniel, in a creativity storm, reached the conclusion…
"Create something that feels new because it’s old. I’m so tired of everyone constantly equating modernity with simplicity: Can’t the new also be worked, be baroque, be extravagant? Has our fixation on what looks or feels modern become a limitation? Has it cost us our imagination?"
Daniel Roseberry, Creative Director
With that perspective in mind, Daniel created 33 gowns for the season in a unique way. In terms of design, the items draw inspiration from the curvy and detailed embroidery of the 20s and 30s, the same aesthetic period as Lyon’s Ribbons. In fact, also ribbons were added to the dresses as a tribute to this little-known history. Furthermore, the embroidery plays a crucial role by imitating the patterns you can find in the fashion of the 20s and 30s.
However, Daniel drew inspiration not only from the 20s and 30s but also from the 1950s’. The reason behind the inclusion is that the 50s were considered the “Golden Age” of haute couture. It was in this time that the evolution toward modernity, art, and symbolism took place. This contrast of ages and aesthetics can be noticed with the combination of corsets (popular in the 20s) with the bows and blazers (popular in the 50s).
Ultimately, the use of noble materials such as silk, pearls, wool, and cotton reinforced the sophistication of the collection. The color palette was divided among three main colors: black, gold, and white pastel, which echoes with the “Olympian” aesthetics of the collection. As a whole, Schiaparelli debuted the fashion week in a luxurious and innovative way, without sacrificing its legacy.
