Meet the winners of the 2023 LVMH Prize

The tenth edition of the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers was held on June 7, 2023. The ceremony took place at the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris. The award was given under the presence of eight artistic directors from LVMH Group houses like Bvlgari, Dior, and Fendi.

The Prize

Since 2013, the LVMH Prize has recognized young fashion designers who have demonstrated exceptional talent. The Prize encourages the support of a new generation of designers by providing mentorship and funding to the winners.

The LVMH Prize is offered to designers between 18 and 40 from all over the world who have developed at least two womenswear, menswear, or genderless collections.

The semi-finalists are chosen by a selection committee and they present their creations at the Paris Fashion Week. The finalists meet the Jury members who evaluate them and choose the winners among 9 candidates during the final, which is held at the Louis Vuitton Foundation.

The winner of the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers receives a 400,000 euros award in addition to personalized assistance from LVMH. The winner of the Karl Lagerfeld Prize receives 200,000 euros in addition to other benefits. Both receive a one-year mentoring in marketing and finance.

Setchun, by Satoshi Kuwata

Satoshi Kuwata, 39, a Japanese designer and founder of the genderless brand Setchu, was chosen from among the nine contenders. Setchu, a fashion company founded in Milan in 2020, is dedicated to create a cultural mix on the founder’s personal experience in the places he lived in, such as London, New York, kyoto, and finally Milan.

The brand name “Setchu” is derived from the Japanese word “Wayo Setchu” (和洋折衷) with “Wayo” denoting Japan and the West and “Setchu” meaning compromise. The brand tries to depicts the mixing of Japanese and Western ideas of style.

Setchu creates simple and functional clothing using inspiration from traditional artifacts, without focusing on gender. Some of the collections can be seen here and also in the instagram

The winners of Karl Lagerfeld Prize

Bettter, by Julie Pelipas

Julie Pelipas, 38, is a Ukrainian designer based in London. In 2019 Pelipas launched Bettter, an upcycling system that functions as a platform for the users. Bettter main service is using clients’ body data to remodel garments and create inclusive clothing. Following the war in Ukraine, she founded the “bettter.community” to showcase her native country’s lively creativity to the rest of the world.

Magliano, by Luca Magliano 

Luca Magliano, 36, is a designer from the Italian city of Bologna. Since its inception in 2017, his label “Magliano” has been situated in this city. Italian subcultures and movements have had a strong influence on the label. The label offers standard menswear elements like the suit and shirt with a dark, offbeat, and unkempt attitude.
