On December 12, the legendary Italian fashion house Max Mara revealed its distinctive design for the Pre-Fall 2025 season. The collection, which includes more than 29 looks, offers a concept that seeks to recapture the essence of the past. Continue reading to learn more about the inspiration behind this release.

But before going forward, let’s remember the roots of the fashion house. Everything started in 1951 with the Italian entrepreneur Achille Maramotti. After WW2, Italy had a very rustic and traditional fashion industry. During these times, the women of well-off spheres of the Italian society preferred the use of tailors and despised industrially made garments. Because of this reality, Achilles understood that he was capable of providing highly crafted clothes in an industrial way. This assumption happened thanks to his networking with American suppliers.

Originally named Confezioni Maramotti, the fashion house introduced casual clothing to the Italian fashion scene. Years passed, and the success was undeniable. In 1957, the company changed its name to Max Mara (Max for international customers, and Mara, which is the diminutive of Maramotti). Decades passed, and Max Mara became an industry giant, with more than 2300 stores around the world in more than 100 countries. The brand’s legacy is still alive, and this collection is proof of it.

The collection

During the 1870s–1890s, the United States grew exponentially thanks to the reconstruction efforts after the American Civil War. In those years, the prosperity created a time of materialistic excesses and lavishness. This economic and social phenomenon was called “The Gilded Age”. In fact, it was during this social hysteria that the American painter, John Singer Sargent, became one of the most influential artists at the end of the century. Nevertheless, he almost lost everything when he risked his career in 1884 by showing the painting “Portrait of Madame X” in Paris.

As you can see above, the portrait seems to be a normal image for today, but for the society of that time, it was an atrocity. The depiction of a woman in such a dress, revealing her bare arms and chest, was considered horrible. John nearly met his “demise” in Europe, but his painting catapulted him to fame in the US. This historical moment is what inspired the Max Mara Pre-Fall 2025 collection. The idea of being different and trying something new and fresh is a message that Max Mara decided to deliver with the new 29 looks.

The new sets deliver a range of dark colors, among which we can see sapphire green, black, and white. The designs of the garments are a mix between glamour and simple minimalism. This is something that Max Mara played very well if we consider the essence of Madame X Portrait. The contrast presented in this collection between the luxury and femininity is clear. However, this creative choice does not interfere with the versatility of the clothing for different occasions. In other words, the idea of femininity and freedom behind Madame X is revived with the collection, something that Max Mara mastered, and it is worth it for the season.
